Alternatives · Habitica
Habitica alternatives for when the game stops working.
Habitica runs on the web, iPhone, Android and Wear OS, and its free tier is genuinely complete rather than a trial, so people rarely leave over platforms or money. They leave because keeping an avatar alive turned into a chore. Habit Pocket is the calm end of that: one grid, real numbers and clock times, no XP and no feed. Loop is free and open source on Android. Streaks is $5.99 once inside Apple. Habitify has the deepest feature set, and HabitNow keeps the habits-and-tasks-together shape that Habitica gets right. If it was the party that kept you going, nothing here replaces it, and you should think hard before leaving.

The reason
Gamification fatigue is a real thing, and it has a shape
Habitica has around 8 million installs on Google Play at 4.7 stars. The complaint isn't quality. It's what the game asks of you after month three.
- The avatar becomes another thing to maintain
- Novelty carries the RPG for a while. Then the quests, the gear and the party check-ins turn into their own to-do list, sitting on top of the habits you actually wanted to build. People describe it as a second job, which is a strange thing for a motivation tool to become.
- Missing a Daily damages your character
- Skip a Daily and your avatar loses hit points, and in a party your misses hurt your teammates too. That's the mechanic, working as designed. It's also why some people start ticking things they didn't do, at which point the tracker is recording fiction.
- It stores compliance, not amounts
- Habitica has Habits, Dailies and To-Dos, and none of them hold a number with a unit or a clock time. There is no place for 7,412 steps, 76.4 kg, or a 07:15 wake-up, so the data you build up over a year is a record of what you ticked rather than what you did.
- The pixel interface is not for everyone
- Some people love it. Others open it at 32 and feel talked down to. This one is taste rather than a flaw, and I mention it because it comes up constantly in the searches this page answers.
Before you switch
Keep Habitica if the party is what gets you out of bed
Social accountability is the thing Habitica does that nothing on this list does at all. A party where your missed Daily costs your teammates real hit points is a genuinely different mechanism from a grid that fills in, and for some people it's the only one that has ever worked. Habitica is also open source, and its free tier holds unlimited habits, dailies, to-dos, parties and challenges, which beats every free tier below including mine. The $4.99 a month buys cosmetics and longer history rather than the core loop. If any of that is why you're there, stay.

5 Habitica alternatives worth considering
Ordered by the need each one answers, not by which I would prefer you picked. Every entry names where it loses, including mine.

Habit Pocket
My appBest for: The opposite end: quiet, and built on real values
Habit Pocket is my app, so weigh this accordingly. It's the deliberate opposite of Habitica: no XP, no levels, no avatar, no feed, and nothing that can take damage. One grid holds the month, and a cell can carry a check, a number with its own unit, a real clock time like 07:15, or a pick from a list you write. The reward it offers instead of points is the data piling up, plus charts that read those values back. A missed day breaks a streak, and marking the day as a skip pauses it instead.
Where it loses: No social layer at all, so if parties were the point this is the wrong direction. No to-do list either, deliberately. Push reminders aren't shipped, there's no Android app yet, and it isn't open source the way Habitica is. My free tier holds 5 habits against Habitica's unlimited.

Loop Habit Tracker
Best for: Free and quiet, on Android
Loop is the minimalist answer and it costs nothing at all: no ads, no paid tier, no account, GPL-3.0 like Habitica. It holds yes/no and measurable habits, and instead of a chain that snaps it keeps a habit-strength score that sags when you miss. Coming off a system where a bad day damaged your character, that decay curve tends to feel like a relief.
Where it loses: Android only, with no iOS version. No sync between devices, no to-dos, and no social anything. If you were on Habitica because it ran on your laptop as well as your phone, Loop goes backwards.
- Platforms
- Android only
- Price
- Free, GPL-3.0

HabitNow
Best for: Keeping habits and tasks in one app
HabitNow is the closest structural match to what Habitica actually is, minus the game. Habits, one-off tasks and timed routines live together the way Habits, Dailies and To-Dos do, the scheduling goes deep, and the reminders are real alarms. One payment of roughly $12 in the US, no subscription.
Where it loses: Android only, so an iPhone rules it out. No live sync, its cloud backup is a paid manual save, and the free tier stops at about seven habits and tasks combined, which is a hard landing from unlimited.
- Platforms
- Android only
- Price
- About $12 once

Habitify
Best for: The most features, on the most devices
Habitify matches Habitica for platform coverage and goes past it on tracking: numeric and timed habits, checklists, Apple Health and Google Fit, Strava and Fitbit, calendar sync, and an API. Off Mode pauses a streak on purpose, which is the closest thing here to Habitica letting you rest at the Inn.
Where it loses: The free plan dropped to 3 habits in April 2026, which is brutal next to Habitica's unlimited. Its own site and its App Store listing quote different prices, so I'm not printing a figure. It needs an account, and there's no social layer.
- Platforms
- iOS, Android, web, macOS, Apple Watch, Wear OS
- Price
- Free for 3 habits, then tiered (see the note under the table)

Streaks
Best for: One payment, inside Apple
Streaks costs $5.99 with nothing recurring, pulls completions straight out of Apple Health, and has the best Apple Watch app in this category. It's an Apple Editors' Choice. A short list of tasks, a chain to keep, and nothing else asking for your attention.
Where it loses: Apple only, no free tier, and a 24-task ceiling. It stores a checkmark rather than a value, and its chain resets when you miss, so the all-or-nothing pressure you might be escaping is still there in a quieter form.
- Platforms
- iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro
- Price
- $5.99 once

Habitica and its alternatives, compared
The rows that actually decide this, filled from each app’s own site and store listing.
Competitor details checked in August 2026 against each app's own site and store listing. Prices are US App Store or Google Play and move with your region. Habitify's tiers are blank on purpose: its site and its App Store listing disagree, so read the current page rather than a number here. Habitica's subscription buys cosmetics, gems and longer history, and every core mechanic on this table is free.
Demo
The reward, if you take the points away.
A live Habit Pocket grid on this page, not a screenshot. Colours deepen as a run grows, so a long streak is something you see rather than a number you're awarded. Exercise is a yes/no, Steps and Weight carry their own units, Wake is a real clock time. Nothing here can lose hit points.
Demo
What accumulates instead of XP.
Two habits laid over one timeline, which only works because the values are real numbers rather than completions. This is the thing that gets more interesting the longer you track, where a level cap gets less interesting. Example data, not a real history.

FAQ
Habitica alternatives — common questions
Habit Pocket is the closest thing to a deliberate opposite: no XP, no levels, no avatar, no feed, and one grid where the reward is the data filling in. Loop is the free version of the same idea on Android. Both keep the daily tracking Habitica gives you and drop the character sheet. Habit Pocket is mine, so factor that in when you read the list above.
No, and I'd rather say that plainly than sell you something. Nothing on this list has parties, quests, or teammates who take damage when you miss. That mechanic is Habitica's alone in this category. If it works on you, leaving means giving it up and replacing it with something quieter, and you should be honest with yourself about whether the quieter thing will hold you.
Loop, and that's the whole list. Loop is GPL-3.0 with no paid tier at all, though it's Android only. Habitica's free plan holds unlimited habits, dailies, to-dos, parties and challenges, and the $4.99 a month buys cosmetics and longer history rather than the core loop, which makes it the most generous free tier in habit tracking. Habit Pocket gives 5 habits free with sync and export included. Habitify gives 3.
In Habit Pocket a blank cell breaks the streak and the colour resets, which is visible without being punitive, and marking the day as a skip pauses the run instead. Loop softens it differently, decaying a strength score rather than resetting anything. The honest question is whether losing the punishment also loses the motivation, and for some people it does. That's the trade this whole page is about.
Not as a file. Habitica has a REST API v3 and an export, and none of the apps here take that as a direct import, Habit Pocket included, which has no importer at all. On Pro its API accepts an entry for any date, so a script can bridge the two. Most people start clean and leave the old account sitting there, which costs nothing since Habitica is free.
